One of Peter Elbow's most distinct difference between being a writer and an academic is the motivation behind writing. A writer writes for the love of writing. Writing to them, is a release, a therapeutic experience to help relieve stress or to relive happy memories. An academic on the other hand has a more structured purpose that drives them. For instance, an academic writes to figure a problem out or because they have to as their job.
